On September 21, 1972, Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. declared martial law at a time of mass unrest from the plunging economy, increasing unemployment, protests against the growing dictatorship and abuse of power from the Marcos Administration. Ferdinand Marcos Sr wanted to extend his term as he was comfortably bleeding the country of every peso he and his cohorts could extract. By the end of his reign to power, he was charged with 34,000 cases of torture , 3,240 of political killings, and 10B dollars of ill gotten wealth.

Such is the battlecry of the human rights victims and their families under the dark years of the Martial Law Era, from 1972 to 1986.
In today’s Pawikan, we bring back stories of these Marcos grim years and the victory of the masses through the People’s Power at Edsa in the Philippines on February 25, 1986.
Through the lenses of 6 authors on the Edsa People’s Power, book reviewer Roseann Salazar dares to confront us with questions of revisionism, impunity, myths of the Marcos golden age and political dynasty, among others.
This program is in commemoration of the Martial Law era, that we do not forget the atrocities and accountability of the Marcos family and their cohorts.
